PESARO
Pesaro is a city of Roman origin. It is in turn an attractive seaside resort, a thriving fishing port and an important manufacturing centre. The city reached its full splendour during the ruling of Della Rovere family in the 1500-1600s. Today the city is popular to be Gioachino Rossini’s birthplace.
At the heart of the city lies the main square, Piazza del Popolo with its sparkling fountain. On a side of the piazza stands the Palazzo Ducale, the clean-lined Renaissance palace, recently restored, was built in the middle of the 15thC by the ruling Sforza family.
Long Via Rossini stands the modest house, where Italy’s great opera composer Gioacchino Rossini was born in 1792.
Further down Via Rossini stands the town’s Cathedral (XII century); inside it is possible to see the remarkable mosaic floor uncovered in 2000. The beautiful early Christian work dates from the 6th Century.
The city was once noted for its ceramic workshops, known as majolica. In the Musei Civici (Civic Museums), in Piazza Toschi Mosca, lies one of Italy’s finest collections of Renaissance and Baroque pottery.
Far 5 kilometers from the city, stands one of the most beautiful Renaissance residence, Villa Imperiale.
